Context engagement focuses on helping people develop healthier associative learning patterns. Few existing reviews in this field have focused on the feasibility of various apps designed for agoraphobia, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, substance use disorders, and sleep disorders 34,35. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies, such as phone apps, can be a potential solution to this issue by enabling broader and more affordable reach, thus addressing the problem of limited access to care 24–26. Future studies should prioritize long-term effectiveness, wider reach to ensure it suits a diverse range of people, and the employment of objective evaluation methodologies.

The majority of psychological treatment research is dedicated to investigating the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) across different conditions, population and contexts. Taking a different perspective, would you accept that a new treatment approach was worthy of becoming an EBP if it was validated solely on the clinical judgment of its originators? By doing so, you are naturally collecting “evidence” to support the intention that the EBP you are choosing to practice really is having a real impact on the patients you serve. These measures can be diagnosis-specific such as the PHQ-9 for depression and the GAD-7 for anxiety, treatment-specific such as the AAQ-II for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or process-specific such as the FMI for mindfulness and the ARM-5 for the therapeutic relationship. In the real world, the treatment approach we take with our patients simply cannot match the structure and controlled nature that is seen in a clinical research trial.
